Not much mention of this guitar around here for a while ?

I'm thinking of finding one since i got used to the short scale and the HB pup of a les paul ; i want these features but prefer the comfort of a fender body, i like the 'more stable and functional mustang' look / vibe (and the classic player HH jag is maybe out of my price range)

so,would any long term users of the cyclone like to report on its performance to date ? beyond its initial appeal to the post cobain market i'm thinking this might be a very useful guitar (its been touched upon elsewhere but i wonder if cobain's tongue was in his cheek with the ugly jag-stang, and the cyclone and toronado are closer to the vibe+ function of what his 'signature guitar' would've been?)

oh yes and i'd love to see pics of your cyclones

I think the majority of people don't know to much about it.Fender really didn't do to much to promote this guitar and consequently not too many stores stocked this model. I love mine. It's basically a Duo-Sonic II with a Stratocaster tremelo. It is made in Mexico but they were deluxe models so the quality is excellent. I love the pickups especially the Atomic Humbucker in the bridge. Here is a picture of mine below.

THATS a nice guitar. Didnt like the yellow one but that looks good - i'd put a black guard on it. Does it play nicely?

thanks, thats good to know. This guitar has everything i need - i've gotten used to my les paul (shorter scale, i find it much easier), but its too heavy.I cant and wont pay gibson money.. I like the mustang body shape but its too thin. i tend to use a bridge humbucker and a neck single coil or P90. And i just like the look of these guitars. i'll track one down

I think you will really like it.The scale is the same as a Gibson and the body is a little thicker than a Mustang. It weighs about the same as a Stratocaster. Below I posted a photo of the Cyclone owned by Sawao Yamanaka, vocalist and rhythm guitarist in The Pillows so that you can see the back.

hope i can track down one of these. i was initially set on white but sunburst or red would look great with a black guard. then i thought ' i have to have an orange guitar !' and now i wouldnt say no to a yellow one either. Already have a black guitar - part of the appeal of fenders, especially the ones with this 60's / mustang kind of vibe, is the colours.

as for the cyclone 2 i just couldnt live with those racing stripes.

I'm really sorry to deliver the bad news...but I would be extremely cautious buying a Cyclone. Before I bought mine I played a few and enjoyed them. However, since then it's been nothing but a disappointment.
The problem with the Cyclone is that the build quality just isn't good enough. I've talked with other owners and they have the same problems. It frequently drops out of tune, and the wiring isn't top notch. That being said...yes, it is a fun guitar to play..for about an hour at a time. After the hour mark, you will get frustrated and run back to a better quality guitar.
I bought it because it fulfilled the same requirements that a Mustang or Jaguar would at a fourth of the price. On a positive note, the neck is really well done and I enjoy the smaller scale. However, the "vintage" tuners are awful and I have already had to replace 2 sets.

If you are still interested in one a little later, I may be putting up my Candy Red Cyclone for sale on here.

I've owned three. My first one I bought used in Lawrence, KS, at Mass St. Music. I paid $250, and still have it. It is black with a tortoise pickguard and one hum/one single coil.

I then bought an orange hum/hum new and gigged it for quite awhile; it developed some nasty fret sprout eventually.

At the same time I also bought new a red one with racing stripes and three single coils with switches. The pickups always sounded thin to me, and I never bonded with it on stage, though the switches were cool.

I eventually sold all but the black one, but I really miss the orange one. I still use the black one on a regular basis.

" However, the "vintage" tuners are awful and I have already had to replace 2 sets. "

This doesn't make any sense. Fender uses vintage tuners on lots of their guitars without any problems. I have six Fenders of my own and they all have vintage tuners - no problems at all.

I agree with Mac, I had import Fender Vintage tuners on my Japanese Jag-Stang and on my Mexican CP Jaguar. My brother has them on his American Floyd Rose Strat (not sure if there is a difference). We have absolutely no tuning problems with them. Having said that, the tuners on my American Deluxe Strat do have a smoother feel.

I hate changing strings on import vintage tuners on my MIJ Mustang and MIM CP Jag, but I hate changing strings on all vintage tuners.

They hold tune very well.

So do the relatively cheap vintage tuners on my Squier Mascis Jazzmaster.

Bad tuners happen though.
