FDP Forum / Fender Product Reviews / '55 Telecaster RI - CIJ 2006-7

The more I play, the more I realize how hard it is to add new information to the available pool of info on all things tele, but Iíll try.

I bought my CIJ TL55-DMC/VSP about three weeks ago. The ďxxĒ in the name denomination usually refers to the pickups, either TX or US. I bough mine used with Lindy Fralin standard PUPs installed, along with cloth insulated wiring and new pots & switches. It also came with a G&G tweed case.

The sound of the guitar is classic tele, which is fantastic, but itís all been said before. Great, jazzy, strat-like tones from the neck PUP, super twang from the bridge. Loads of control from the tone pot, so itís no surprise that tele players get so much use out of it.

Unplugged, this tele is, without any doubt, the loudest solid body guitar Iíve ever played. Iím not usually excited by sustain, but this guitar is different.

The neck shape is advertised as a soft-v, but this neck is more of a chunky-c. The 42mm nut width is wider than Iím used to, but Iím getting used to it. The guy who sold it to me told me that the neck was lacquer finished, which contradicts whatís posted on the Japanese web sites, but I canít tell the difference.

I bought this guitar to face off with my strat. I planned to keep only the winner. There is a huge overlap between the two guitars, but Iím keeping both.

Some features of the 1955 RI:
Ash Body
Maple One Piece neck
Single ply 5-screw white guard.
3 section chrome bridge saddles.
Tinted (aged looking) fretboard.
6.5 lbs on bathroom scale.
Modern three way switch. n/nb/b
