Something's up with this set...

Anyone know if the seller is an FDP'er?

Can you pick out what's wrong here?

I may be color blind, but the bobbins look black to me and not grey.

ah hah

The leads are wrong on the third pickup!

It looks to me like the beginning of the pickup is still in the right spot though... the leads were just attached through the wrong eyelets!

Abby!!! What are you doing!!! lol

SMark, I played a Fender Custom Shop 1960 Relic at my local guitar shopt. These pups sound great and they grow on me each time I play it. How different is the character of these from the Abby Masterwounds?

The reason I ask, I bought a damaged set off ebay of these 1960 Relic pups. Something happened to the winder on all three pups like the wire bunce up or something on the last couple of winds. I am debating whether Fender would want to see these for quality control purposes because there is no way these were damaged in shipment.

I have thought about pulling winds off till the bunched wire is removed?

What do you recommend?

"What do you recommend?"

I would post some pics and let a few of us here look at them. Do they work or are they dead? If they work, I am always one to just leave well enough alone.

The Custom Shop 60s will have bit more aged and woody tone than the Masterwounds. Not quite as big at the top or the bottom. The Masterwounds are huge in that regard and have a clarity that few other pickups have.

The Neck and Mid are dead. When I post pics tomorrow, you can see a wire unwound from the neck pup. The bridge works, but it has a wrinkle in the outer wind also.

I have the COA number also.

Below, I put the ebay link.

Aren't the Abby Master-wounds supposed to have the gray bottoms and a blue dot on the neck, none on the mid, and a red on the bridge? Hmmm... these look more like a set I just picked up from a fellow FDP member who once worked as an executive for Fender. Dated around the same time too... wonder what was happening in November of 2005... maybe a special run of guitars? Masterbuilt model[s]? Not sure... but the set I got reads around/slightly under 5.9/5.9/6.0 [n/m/b - depending on temp] and has outrageous clarity, sustain, and articulation, plus intense k-e-rrrr-ang factor [when tested through a CS alder body]!

rfrakes331K...

Oh yeah, I remember that auction. I had it on my watch list. If you think the break is just among a few of the outside strands, then you can carefully try to unwind them if you are confident that you can do it. Otherwise there are a couple FDP'ers (not me) that can likely do the work for you.

They actually were damaged after the fact because he had sold these previously in another auction before they were damaged. So he likely refunded the buyers money and then sold them again, but as damaged.

Here's the original auction...

Oh - to make things even more interesting... my 'set' has the exact same dates... two on 11/8/05 and one on 11/17/05, plus the 11/17 had the same issue with leads on one of them... almost threw my Fender Gold service tech/master luthier guy for a tearful loop when he tried the in between notches [5-way switch]... a quick fix though... and the cascading clarity was all there.

Most curious... I thought the official 'Abby Master-wounds' were all done way back in 2000-2001. Any word on whether a few more were commissioned/done to similar spec in the late 05/early 06 period?

FWIW... I do have solid confidence--and visual confirmation--that these pickups I received were in fact wound by Abigail Ybarra.

Yep. And I'm betting these are enamel.

"Aren't the Abby Master-wounds supposed to have the gray bottoms and a blue dot on the neck, none on the mid, and a red on the bridge?"

That's right, and it should have a yellow-ish hot lead from the middle pickup. They should also all have Custom Shop stickers, and, as you mentioned, the dates are all wrong for a Masterwound set.

Single Malt Strat...

I'd like to get the history on this batch of Abby hand wound pups. Maybe Poster Nutbag can enlighten us...? This thing about the backwards leads is quite amusing. I just gotta know why Abby did this.

Where's Abby's Kid when you need her?

SMark, I totally agree... and my curiosity is quite piqued... By the way, my other two Abby pickups, wound some time in May 06, and each bearing a red dot, read 6.3 to 6.4, black bottoms. I may reach out to Poster Nutbag over the next few days if we can't resolve this mystery ourselves. The coincidence of the dates is almost hard to believe. That said, the set on ebay is almost certainly Abby's own winding, since we have supporting evidence that Abby was most likely winding on the given dates.

As for enamel or formvar... no purple or pinkish tint to the windings on any of mine. The CS 65 set I own has a more distinct pinkish tint, and the CS 69 sets I have seen have the purple tint. Both the 65 & 69 have gray bottoms.

I'm in contact with the seller, and guess what?

"These were presented to me by a Custom Shop employee as a gift and this is how I got them."

I was telling him that his pickups and that certificate likely do NOT belong to each other. He just removed the pic of the certificate from the auction.

I do think your pups and his pups are likely related.
