My Weber tweed deluxe that I built last summer has suddenly decided to give me problems. Occasionally while playing it will start an extremely loud squeal or screeching noise. Sounds like it's about to self destruct.
I've noticed that while creating this terrible noise, the chassis becomes temporarily microphonic if I tap on it with a guitar pick.
I have opened it up and checked all the connections with a wooden 'chopstick' and it seems that no matter where I tap the sound will start. Then for no apparent reason it will quit and play fine for a few hours before it start again.
Although I built the amp as a kit, I really do not know much about electronics. I think the sound is coming from the pre-amp section as I can turn down the squeal with the volume control with which ever channel I'm plugged into. It will squeal on either channel.
I have replaced every tube including rectifier but it still happens. It seems like any vibrations or bump on the cabinet can sometimes but not always start the squealing .
I keep thinking it is a loose connection but I cannot locate the source.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks! Danny

Have you checked that your input jacks are making a good connection to ground when there is nothing plugged into them? After some wear and tear the ground connection on cheaper jacks will tend to fail. You can test it by plugging into all four jacks and see if the squeal goes away.

Brockville, thanks for your response. You may be on the right track as I noticed that when the squeal was active, if slip the wooden probe into the jack and broke the contact the noise would subside. I'll focus more in that direction. At the time I was perplexed and didn't even consider that to be the source of the problem. At least that gives me some hope.
Thanks! Danny

There was a discussion about grounding the input jacks with a wire from the jack to the brass plate here recently. This may be a way to go if that's the problem, then you're sure not to have that grounding be an issue again.

BINGO! That was the problem. Now I know why it is considered an upgrade to get better quality jacks. I was able to re-bend the terminals to make a solid contact. Eliminated the squeal plus it virtually eliminate all the noise. I recalled when I first built the amp it was as quiet as a church mouse. And so it is again.
I will do a search regarding the use of a ground wire.
Thanks Again!

Danny,
Glad to hear it worked out for you.
Re-bending should keep it quiet for a while but you should consider replacing them with Switchcraft jacks.
