Why are the fender cases such junk? I`m on my3rd case in 3years.Cheap hinges, cheap plastic that melts down on your 1st outside gig. I mean these cases are not roadworthy at all. Thanks for letting me rant about this. Tommy Mark

What type of Fender case are you talking about?

Aug 20th, 2000 06:22 PM   Edit   Profile   Print Topic   Search Topic

The cases I`m talking about are the moulded plastic. These seem to be the ones that they sell you when you buy a new a new guitar.

Have you tried the Deluxe molded cases? They
have heavy duty hinges, very plush interiors
and are very strong. I have had no problems with
mine at all. You said that the plastic melted.
What plastic part melted? The Deluxe molded cases
don't come with American Standards, I think that
you have to order these seperately. I think that
if you are that hard on a case and have had three
in the last three years you should seriously
consider getting a road case for your guitar.

telewacker, you are so right, I posted a similar complaint a while back and got flamed by like a dozen people telling me it wasn't a fender case I had or I had a lemon. I won't go into the whole story but I ended up returning the molded case for the black tolex case. The store I deal with are really great guys and they let me upgrade for $20. I deal with them locally but you can go to their website pbmusic.com it has got great deals on fender products.

That case you mention is a piece of junk. I was given one thrashed. I spent about 6-7 bucks on a latch that definetley locked it and with epoxy and paper clips, secured the hinges. Looks hooky but it works but it won't go through the riggers of
giging. I must baby it and its fine. In general, I wouldn't reccommend buying one to anyone

I gotta` agree - I have a new AS Texas Spl. Strat and I`m very dissatisfied with the case that came with it. The 2 latches on the neck part of the case close way too easily, and the 2 latches on the body part are VERY hard to close, besides that, one of the hinges now "snaps" when I close the case.I`ll try oiling it,or something, but it`s just a matter of time before something breaks. My Deluxe Plus`s case is much better.

I have 2 Tweeds and a Std Molded case. I've had no problems with any of them. The Tweeds are made by G&G and the molded case is made by SKB.

Thanks for the replys.I just don`t understand why they would give you cheap junk when you pay that kind of money for a serious guitar. What really burned me up was when the guitar fell out through the bottom of the case on to the road while leaving a gig.My tele now suffers from road rash on the body. I was lucky it didn`t break anything else.

Weird about those SKB cases. I haven't had any problems with one I have, but then again I don't use it on a regular basis. I've been meaning to pick up a nice Tolex to replace it with (a Fender just doesn't look happy in anything but), and this thread has convinced me to finally go out and do it. I know they cost a bit more, but what's the extra expense when you have a grand into the git? Anyone up for a molded Strat case with "Fender USA" molded onto the sides?

This thread has definately vindicated me. There was a similar thread a few weeks back and a bunch of people took offense to me knocking this case. This case belongs with the squiers.

I won't say they are junk and I have a hard time imagining one melting but the one that came with my American Standard Strat is not a very good case. It doesn't line up real well. I have to fiddle with it for a couple of seconds to get it closed. I expect the latches to break off in a few years. I don't even have enough room for my strap in the case. But it does do a reasonable job of protecting the guitar. The guitar does fit in it very well. I have played some outdoor gigs where it was out in over 100 degree weather for several hours and it never melted or looked like it was going to have a problem.

When it goes I will replace it with a Fender tweed case but until then I will use what came with it.

Steve_D I`m not kidding about this thing melting. I coudn`t believe it either. The problem with the latching occured within 6 months of purchasing this piece of $h## . Ah well I guess I`m gonna bite the bullet and get me a Tolex too.I would have had one from the start given the option.Live and learn.Anybody ever build their own? Hmm... seems feasable.

Yesterday I replaced the SKB moulded case I described above, didn`t want to deal with it anymore. Got me a G&G,brown tolex with a gold colored interior, absolutely gorgeous case! Funny thing,I took the SKB to GC with me thinking I could trade it in,but they didn`t even want it! I ended up bringing it back home with me.I put it in the basement for now until I can figure out what else to do with it.

My assessment of the molded case that came with my Am Std is exactly as Steve_D described. However, I got a good deal on a black tolex G&G case so I upgraded to that. So now all three of my Strats live in G&G cases (one black, two tweed).
I also like the room that the G&G cases give you--I could barely fit a strap in the molded case!

I have a Fender strat case made by SKB. The latches broke off in 3 years of carefull use.
I've always thought that the Fender "vintage style" cases were better...then they came out with the new G&G cases, used for Custom Shop instruments!...but these have imitation plastic "leather" ends and you have to look very carefully to find one that actually stays opens and closes properly! - so much for their "Best" case.
Try to find an old one. There are vastly superior to the "best" new Fender cases!

The G&G cases use real leather on the ends and handles. G&G has made these same cases for 40+ years.
