OK, well I will update you on mine. Since my last post I have.....

1. Installed a Tusq nut
2. Tinted the neck with Zinzer amber shellac and finished with Deft nitro (looks killer)
3. Replaced the neck pickup with a GFS strat pickup. Hated it and put the old one back in.
4. Replaced the bridge pickup with a GFS Liverpool, just for something different.

The Tusq nut improved intonation on the lower frets. The Liverpool pickup sounds great (as did the Seymour Duncan). I ordered a GFS bridge for it but frankly the stock bridge is not rattling much at all so I may just leave it as is rather than drill more holes.

I love this guitar.

I have finished round one of my upgrades - finally!

Tusq pre-cut nut. I had to sand the base of it quite a bit,but it's much better than the original one and doesn't bind (like my original did).

GFS bridge - I got a black one really cheap. It barely needed any intonation.

The tuners had to be left alone (for now) - I was gonna drop in some MIM Std tuners, but the alignment pins are slightly different. So I'll deal with that only if it ends up with issues.

I really like the stock pups - it's my only guitar with a 'bucker.

My 51 is still almost unmodded. Just swapped the neck singlecoil for a more vintage sounding, less output old Japanese VRI pickup (guess it is a 80ies Tokai) that I had taken out of my Squier JV-series Stratocaster.

Yesterday, I brought my 51 to rehearsal with my band - this was first time I did that and I had one special song in mind, where I wanted to use it for the big volume difference of the two pickups.

My bandmates liked it a lot and I had to use it in another song right away :-)

Yet, I also have to add, that while I love the neck and light weight and sound, I had slight trouble with microphonic pickups. I knew that that old single is microphonic, but I was surprised that this modern, rather high output bucker is microphonic as well - first time ever I realize some low cost issue on this guitar ...
(no need to worry, I did not need fully gain with this bucker, it has so much output I could play with less gain and without microphonic issues)

Absolutely a cool guitar and one of my best deals ever.

My 51 has really bad frets, like quite a few high ones, so i will block em and crown em, also i will replace the crummy plastic nut with bone, outside of those issues i think it will be a good player once set up

Yep, and if you stick around, in another couple of years it will be some other Squier that everyone is raving about.

51's are great but I'm kind of glad the craze is over. I remember at one point looking at the top 10 threads on the Squier forum and seven of them were '51 related. I think I was responsible for one of the threads that wasn't '51 related and there were tumbleweeds blowing through that one. I knew it was starting to get a litle crazy when some of the owners were swearing up and down that not only were they better than MIAs but if you rubbed them long enough a genie would pop out and grant you three wishes.

Acidhouse,
while I guess you are correct (at least I agree), it is still funny enough, that one of my bandmates is telling me he likes the sound of my 51 more than of my MIA Stratocaster.
So I start collecting wishes and set up a pro and con list, that I am ready and know my top 3 when the time has come ;-))

Oh no slight on my part, I have two or three Squiers that I think are as good as my MIAs. It's a great guitar. It's just that there was at least a solid year when the Squier sub-forum was really the Squier '51 sub-forum and give the devil it's due, the '51s have risen in value and are starting to fetch more money than they originally cost new at their highest price points.

Because of this thread I got mine out a couple days ago and played on it the last two days. The past few times I tried it, it just sounded terrible to me but, my goodness, it has been like eating ice cream from the carton. I didn't want to quit.

I've been playing through my Pathfinder 15R and I guess I got it set just right because I just couldn't mess it up.

Good eatin'!

My 51 inspired the 12 yr old guitarist in my son's band to have a bucker installed in the bridge position of his Strat. He was thinking about doing it, and I let him play my 51 - and he loved it. It also helped us decide what type of bucker he wanted since the tone of the stock 51 bucker was appealing to him, we knew he didn't need a $100 pup to make him happy.

I need to go re-string my 51 and get it gig ready.

Just wondering what the most popular color seems to be on the Squier 51 and have read that more than one have a 1st string that wants to come off the board while playing , is this due to neck not being aligned properly, nut spacing or?? thanks

If I'm not mistaken I believe most wanted the blondes. I think that they were more banana pudding than blond. Mine is a sunburst.

As far as strings coming off, I've not had a problem, I put 10's on mine.

Not much of a guitar player, but I saw a "New" '51 Squier at the local music shop today. I was under the impression they were discontinued a few years back. Any further information?

I got a sunburst one from a fellow FDP-er this week and fired it up today for the first time. I've got to say that it has serious bang for the buck and it's innovative to boot - lots of useful sounds.

Sorry if this has been covered already, but are there black neck-pickup covers to replace the white ones?

I don't think there are Paul.
Your best bet is to spray paint the white cover gloss black.
