I've been listening to an old recording some of you may have heard of. It's titled "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" by a group of greaser lookin' dudes calling themselves Derek & The Dominoes.

Anyway, I'd forgotten those cool melodic lines Carl Radle plays on just about every song. He's got a great P bass with flatwounds sound going, and he drives things (along with Jim Gordon) right along. Unobtrusive bass playing that supports the song but doesn't get lost in faceless anonymitiy. Funky, driving, and clever without drawing attention to itself.

There's a couple of pretty OK guitar players on there too.

If you watch the Tom Dowd movie, it's interesting to hear bits of Carl and Jim getting soloed on the board during the Layla track - sounds like he was using a pick on that track. I know he was touring with a J during that Dominoes period.

"I know he was touring with a J during that Dominoes period"

That's interesting. The only interveiw I've read (in GP around 1977) he said he had a Precison with a Jazz neck (and there was a photo of him with a sunburst P sporting a rosewood FB Jazz neck with blocks and binding), an Alembic, and he mentioned that a new bass was coming out from Music Man. All the photos I've seen show him with P's or StingRays, so that's intriguing about him using a Jazz...

I'm a fan of Carl Radle. My fav is 'Why Does Love Got To BE So Sad' on the Derek and the Dominoes LIVE album but I like all his playing. He and Jim Gordon make a great team.

I think Carl played the field, so to speak. I remember photos of him with a Tele or early P bass in the Delaney & Bonny with Eric days, along with the J bass on stage somewhere with the Dominoes. Probably not unlike some of us who chop and change!

Didn't he also play on "Whatever Gets You Through the Night?"

Also did good stuff on Leon's Shelter Records with Freddie King - a man known to have a fondness for the funky side of life.

Carl's approach to playing reminds me of the Duck sometimes: a great supportive player, often understated but very appropriate. Eric may have thought so too as he picked Duck after Carl's death in 1980.

amcrory,

Did he play bass on "Whatever Gets..."? I have always loved the drive and occasional melodic bits the bassist played on that tune... nice!

Radle did a great job on Cocker's "Maddogs and Englishmen" tour record.

And he was with Gary Lewis and the Playboys when Leon Russell was producing them.
