Got a set today, GREAT tube. I'll never pay for vintage tubes again, thanks for the original thread. These are so articulate that I heard a string buzz that I never heard before. I raised the saddle and no more buzz just clean tone.
I'm going to place an order for the large bottle to see which I like best.

What are you using them in???

(I think they may be 5881/6L6WGB and am interested when NOS runs out.)

I just got 10 large bottle versions here, 4 for me and 4+2 for a friend. They sure look great, hope they sound as good. Can't wait to try them out.

they are going in a red knob twin (hah I can see the funny look on all your faces already but mine works fine)

Vintage twin, I had GE's in there. Call me a sinner but I think I'll keep the TAD's in there. I put two in my hrd and it woke up. How can I say it I'm sold. Can't wait to try the large bottle cause they are supposed to be like the old RCA's.

I have no clue as to what they are but they are labled 6L6WGC-STR PC:33 TC:639 I have no Idea what that means.

EDIT Just read the box.. PC= Plate current TC= amplification The box also says that they are SELECTED TUBES. SO they could be made by anyone. I'm still sold, I didn't ask for matched tubes but according to the boxes I got matched. After setting the bias they are matched. The real test is the sound and I love it. Now if they had some 12AX7's

I'm glad more folks are finding these tubes.
They are superb. [I think I was maybe the first to mention them on these pages when I first popped them in my HRD a few months ago.]
I prefer the small bottle 6L6WGC. It's marketed as TAD's GE style 6L6 and bares a strong resemblence to the GT6L6GE. Except it's cheaper and arguably better.
They are a real class act [should that be Glass act......groan ;^)].
There are lots of good tubes around these days which deserve all the glowing praise they receive. When I installed the TADs, I was expecting to compare them with other nice tubes I'd tried and be thinking....."better top end ..." , "rounder mids.....", or whatever. It just didn't happen. I just thought " s$%^!!!!!:^) "

Has anybody compared the small bottle TAD 6L6WGC-STR with NOS GE 6L6GC or any NOS 5881?
And with the GT-6L6GE?

It stands for the "Tube Amp Doctor", who's a European amp service guy. I believe he's in Germany. It's easy to Google search "Tube Amp Doctor" to reach his site.

TAD = Tube Amp Doctor. The way I understand this is they are select Chinese production tubes. They are stamped as "TAD".

Other than that I don't know much more. I have a set of each (long & short bottle). Currently using the short bottle in my HRD and they sound terrific.

How would these Small bottle 6L6WGC-STR Tad tubes work in the power section of my TONEMASTER ?
My Preamp tubes -I will probably go with Sovtek. Thanks for the response on "Retubing my Tonemaster". Everybody needs to do a little research before spending hard earned $$duckies and possible making big ignorant mistakes. I KNOW i've made my share. Any more advice always welcomed. Thanks,

I have had these "6L6WGC-STR" in my two rock for about a month now. The are tres sweet. I replaced a pair of rca's and didn't miss them a bit.

I don't know for sure but I bet they would sound killer in a tonemaster.

Why would they not sound good in a tonemaster?! They're great tubes as from what I've heard. For preamp tubes I wouldn't go for sovteks, but that's just my opinion.

I checked their site and the EL84's look to be relabeled Sovtek etc. Is this the case?

For you guys wondering about the small glass TAD's ratings. I emailed TAD and got a response that the short glass TAD's ratings "are equal to 6L6GC tubes. If you plan on replacing tubes in amps calling for 7581A's (Plate voltage above 500v), then use the tall bottle TAD." More or less, that's what the guy replied. So fear not. You can put these in twins, bassmans, supers etc. As for a comparison of them to GE NOS 6L6GC's, see my post in the other TAD thread on this board. I found the short bottle TAD to be less output, less extended hi and low end, but nice sounding. More like a 5881 with higher ratings.

7581As max plate voltage is 500V, same as 6L6GCs. The only difference is the 7581A has a max dissipation of 35W and the 6L6GC is 30Ws. They max plate voltage is not rated any higher than 500V. The 7581A is a substitute tube for the 6L6GC according to the tube substitution manual and are completely interchangeable.

Currently the only original TAD designs are the two discussed 6L6 tubes and the upcoming EL84-STR tube (use the search function on their website to look for EL84-STR).

All other tubes are graded, tested, etc. current production tubes from the usual sources. At least that's what Andreas of TAD posted to another discussion board last February.

Assuming the short bottle is just a 6L6GC, than can I assume that it's rated at 30w dissipation?

I'd like to try these in me and my kid's amps...

Rocky is correct about the virtues and ratings of 6L6GC vs 7581A's. I do think however, that people like Ampeg, ran the 7581A's up at much higher voltages and power dissapation levels than 6L6GC's. To clear this up (translation - to clear up my misquote of TAD), here is TAD's exact quote when I asked about the small bottle TAD ratings:

"Dear Karl,
they are clearly 6L6GC (6L6WGC) specs.
With applications >500V B+ we would recommend the large bottle TAD 6l6GC-STR instead; also to replace 7581a.

best regards,
Andreas Hecke"

Also, I wouldn't say that a 30 watt and a 35 watt tube are "completely interchangeable." Maybe somewhat interchangeable if you mind your P's and Q's..... So Russ, according to Andreas, you can assume their short bottle 6L6 is a 30 w tube.
