FDP Forum / Fender Custom Shop / Poll: Relic vs. Closet Classic vs. NOS

I unintentionally transformed my TM 56 Strat from NOS to CC in a matter of hours. I accidently left it outside on the front step during practice one night (was playing my Tele). It was -30 outside. Needless to say the finish severely checked, but I swear that it sounds better since it's deep-freeze. So I have to believe that there is something to the fact that people think the Relics sound better.

My preference would have been for CC finish, but not much selection in these parts, so I ended up with NOS guitars. The Strat was used and an incredible deal.

The relic'ing plus the usual Fender lack of neck pitch suits the lazy sod in me that likes to be able to just leave a guitar on the concrete steps when having a summer outdoor strum.

I inadvertently left my Nocaster relic on top of an ashtray (on the aforementioned steps) without realising that there was still a smoking butt in it.

Genuine cigarette burns - how rock'n'roll and probably now impossible to replicate due to H&S regs.

Apart from that I do like the look and feel.

I take care of my instruments, so never got the relic thing, until I actually gave them a chance and played them. I cannot speak for the ones made after early 2014, but the ones I have played and then bought from 2004 to 2014 feel like vintage guitars that have been to a good luthier, refretted and properly set up. If they were actually vintage strats and teles, I would not play them, but as relics, I very much enjoy playing them.
