HELLO VK CLUB.
I JUST BOUGHT VK 2851 NEW AND IM SO PSYCHED.
I HAD ALL INTENTIONS OF COMING HOME WITH A BLKFACE SR BUT ONCE I PLUGGED INTO THE KING I KNEW WHAT I HAD TO DO.
ANYWAY HOW ABOUT A LIST OF PLAYERS USING THE VK BESIDES TOWNSHEND.
ALSO CAN ANYBODY GIVE ME SOME GOOD SETTINGS TO GET THE MOST TONE AT THE LOWEST VOLUMES.

dilznick,
Turn your caps lock off OK ;-)

The only player I know using the VK other than Pete (Who) is Eric Clapton. Well... Pete Anderson did play the VK I bought at an in store demonstration, great player but it doesn't make it any more valuable, haha.
I would also like to know the other pros who use these amps.
Tele295 has a list of settings. (hint hint)

Johnny A (if you don't know who this guy is you should - check his website - an awesome guitarist) used to use a VK (he uses a Marshall 30th anniversary combo now).

Jeff Golub (jazz/rock player) uses the V-K.

Danny Gatton used a V-K as well.

Others? I'm surprised there aren't more - esp. in the blues and roots rock world.

Oh - I forgot to add Zenland, Triggerfingers, ZZZZezums

Zen - the ticking in the VK vibrato circuit may not be a tube. My VK had a similar problem. Bruce Zinky (who designed the amp) talked me through this procedure:

Open up the amp, and turn on the tremolo You'll see the photoresistor wrapped in electrical tape with the light blinking inside. Undo the tape, and genly pull the two ends of the photoresistor apart until he clicking stops. Re-wrap with electrcal tape.

BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL!!!! Do not monkey around with a screwdriver or any other tool if you don't know what you're doing. Touch nothing else. There are lethal voltages inside tube amps.

dilznik - Here is a link to a VK settings thread. Danny Gatton's personal VK settings are here too:

So... I've been thinking about getting a VK.
I currently own a twin re-issue (selling it) and a CVR. What are the similarities between the CVR and the VK?? I'm looking for the same type of amp as the CVR, early breakup-not as clean as the twin or super reverb.. still chimey.. but I need a tighter bass response.. and need the amp to hold together better when I'm really pushing it hard...
any thoughts?? is the VK the amp for me? I've heard that it shows some similiarities with the CVR.. and I figure if it's 60 watts??
Hmm??

Yeah, this might be the one for you, TC. It's more similar to a CVR than any other amp currently in Fender's line. You'll find it has the same speakers and lack of a negative feedback loop (which gives the VK & the CVR their bark). Three EQ knob, so you wil be able to work on dialing in the tightness you seek. ou could also call it a Super Reverb with teeth. You'll never go back to a Twin after playing one of these.

Thanks for the link Tele295. I'll fiddle with them. I'm also getting a tick with the vibrato but I'm definately not opening this puppy up. I'll save that job for the dealer. I love the sound of this amp with all of my guitars so far. My only complaint is that I can't get all of the beautiful tone at a low volume.

Input 2 sure takes some of punch out of my VK. Sounds great with my Gretsch and gobs of reverb. Thanks again Tele295

dilznick - have you tried the interactive volume and tone control trick to bring down your overall volume? Try this: turn all your tone controls to zero, and crank the volume control. Now sneak just a little bit of the bass control in. Voila! Instant master volume. Adjust to taste.

Tele295,
"Touch nothing else."

I sure wouldn't monkey about with something I've heard that can throw me across the room, lol.

Tremelo Cowboy> Sounds like a VK may be in order based on your description. I have a TRRI and a VK. I use the TRRI more with humbucker-based guitars and for what I play (cleaner tone) it's a great amp. However you'll get more breakup with a VK thought it stays fairly clean (at least mine does) until you get the volume up to 4 or more.

I have yet to touch my '94 VK (it's in transit... T minus approx. 72hrs...) I feel like a kid counting the days till xmas...

One question for the VK club: my VK doesn't have the original Eminence Blue Frames, or the Jensen reissues... the previous owner swapped the original Blue Frames, for Eminence "Vintage Series" Ceramics (as opposed to Blue Frames and Jensen's using AlNiCo magnets)...

Any positive or negative feedback with Ceramic vs. AlNiCo ?... anyone else using Ceramic magnes wih VK's ?...

Can't be of any help to ya swhoelefp. Never heard the Em. ceramics. In fact, never heard the amp with any ceramics.

Thanks, ZZZezums... yeah, I've done a ton of research into this one, and can't find anyone with VK's using ceramics... (I know the Vibrolux, SRRI and DRRI has used them in the past... I asked the original owner, and he was advised by a renowned tube amp technician in NYC named Blackie (Tubesville) that ceramic magnets in VK's dramatically improve tone... the previous owner (and original owner) indicated a 200% improvement in tone... I'll give you my opinion when I get the VK later this week...
